FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sen. Rafferty Speaks at Memorial Day CeremonyAs veterans from World War II through the Vietnam War listened, Sen. John C. Rafferty, Jr. reminded the crowd gathered at the Southeastern Veterans Center Memorial Day ceremony of the great sacrifice made by Americans in all wars who gave their lives for the freedoms we enjoy today. "For society this is a day of sales on washers and dryers, pool openings and barbecues. People forget the true meaning of the day. Today we can root for the Phillies and Flyers due to those who protect and serve. "This is a day set aside to give a part of our hearts to those who made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our many freedoms," said Rafferty, R-44th. Rafferty said that he wants those who have served to never be forgotten. "We’ve learned how to win wars to allow us our freedoms and liberties," he said "We now look out for other countries so they can enjoy our same freedoms and liberties. "Our military is known throughout the world. We lead by example. We leave other countries in a better way. For all who serve, God bless you. For those who have served, you will never be forgotten." Rebecca Kesselring, commandant of the Southeastern Veterans Center read a proclamation from Gov. Rendell and VFW Post 31, which includes many veterans who live at the Southeastern Veterans Center, lowered the American Flag in respect for those who gave their lives and then raised the flag during the playing of the Star Spangled Banner. The names of those veterans from the Southeastern Veterans Center who died during the past year were read during the ceremony and a bell tolled in their memory and honor.
